Flying Lizards Fly High in Sebring
Lynne Tibbet
It was pretty neat to see one of Infineon Raceway's tenants take the checkered flag in Saturday's 12 Hours of Sebring (Fla.) sports-car race. The Flying Lizards, which call Infineon Raceway home
, took the victory in the GT2 class in a Porsche 911 in the 56th running of the historic race. It was their first win in Sebring behind drivers Joerg Bergmeister, Wolf Henzler and Marc Lieb. Not sure if many race fans know this, but in addition to having a world-class racing facility, Infineon Raceway is home to one of the world's busiest motor-sports industrial parks, with more than 70 tenants. The Flying Lizards are one of those tenants. They also took second place behind the team of Darren Law, Seth Neiman and Alex Davison. Incredible effort guys!
Congrats are also in order for NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle rider Matt Guidera, a good friend of the raceway's. Matt, from outside of Sacramento, won in Pro Stock Motorcycle in Gainesville (Fla.) over the weekend. Matt was the top qualifier and rode that all the way to the title. Good things happen to good people; Matt recently attended our NHRA Tour de Charity Karting event, where we raised more than $14,000 for Speedway Children's Charities. Matt was kind enough to donate his time for that. Great stuff!
Mark Tuesday, April 1, on your calendars. We'll host Two-Wheel Thunder, a test session for the AMA Superbike Series, which comes back to the track May 16-18 for the big Kawasaki AMA Superbike Showdown weekend. Admission is FREE and you can wander through the pits. It's very light and cool and the riders are very friendly. We'll also have Supermoto USA demos behind the grandstand and some SB Freaks Street Freestyle. Play hooky and come on by; you won't be disappointed.
TRIVA TIME: Looking back on the 40-year history of Sears Point-Infineon Raceway, we'd be curious to know who you think is the best driver/rider on this circuit from the past 40 years and why. It can be a stock-car racer, sports-car racer, drag racer, motorcycle racer, whatever! Let us know who and why. We're curious!
Come back soon for another update on the Raceway Rant!
